Love Your Melon, a national organization dedicated to giving a hat to every child in America battling cancer, has found its way to Western State Colorado University.

Western student and Love Your Melon crew leader Megan Ditzenberger said that the crew officers are at the beginning stages of creating the Western State Campus Crew and are working on making the crew a Student Government Association sanctioned club.

Love Your Melon sells beanies, mugs, apparel, and scarves through its online website. The organization uses the one-for-one method: for every Love Your Melon hat bought, another is donated to a child battling cancer. These hats are donated in person by people dressed as superheroes by participating ambassadors across the country.

Love Your Melon will donate 50 percent of proceeds on every product sold to the Pinky Swear Foundation and CureSearch, working directly with both organizations in the fight against cancer.

“There is nothing like this on campus, I don’t think you can find another group on campus that does what we do, this is entirely volunteer based,” Ditzenberger stated.

The LYM Western Campus Crew has almost met their max crew occupancy of 20 members in less than a month after being established, but they still seek support from the Gunnison-Crested Butte community.

“The great news is that there are no kids suffering with cancer in the Gunnison-Crested Butte area, but we are hoping to do some outreach in Grand Junction, Montrose, Delta, Buena Vista, Denver, and Colorado Springs,” said Ditzenberger.

The campus crew encourages the WSCU campus to get involved and support a great cause. The crew says you can support LYM by following and liking their Facebook Page, Twitter Page, and Instagram Page, as well as purchasing a LYM product and selecting Western State Colorado University at checkout.

“Love Your Melon is special because we get to go on hospital visits to see the kids, and we come dressed as super heroes, and we help them forget that they are sick and give them a day to just be a kid,” stated a member.

The Campus Crew hopes to have a table at WSCU’s annual Spring Fest and also hopes to be involved in the on-campus Relay for Life Event on April 9.
